Volunteer Teaching Program

Teaching the children here is a very rewarding experience. It is
highly valued by the local community and by the children themselves.
The school system benefits from receiving the materials and efforts
which Volunteer Peten provides. The children experience working with
people from other cultures and the additional time and energy that
these volunteers bring. For students or staff of any field,
particularly those who are training to be teachers, this teaching
experience will be highly valuable on a variety of levels.
Volunteers have the opportunity to work with children at primary or
secondary level, at a variety of different schools. There are music,
art, social science and English language activities which can be used
by volunteers. It is recommended to come prepared with activities in
mind and materials to support them. However there are also some
activities/materials already in place for use by new volunteers. You
will be provided with a comprehensive guide to teaching in San Andres
upon on your arrival.
If
you do not speak Spanish, it would be a good idea to work with another
volunteer who does speak Spanish. This is because children at primary
level do not have any English, and at secondary level, they are only
beginning to learn. There are usually Spanish speaking volunteers in
San Andres who can support the non-Spanish speakers in the teaching
programme. Many non-Spanish speaking volunteers have learned a good
deal of Spanish while teaching in the schools.

This project is very important for the community on many levels. The
project cannot exist without people who are willing to come and bring
energy and enthusiasm to these schools.
