Ecological Restoration
One of the goals of Volunteer
Petén is to help promote proper
stewardship of natural areas. One of these areas is the water
reserve of the town Ixhuacut, located 1 km north of the ecological
park. The town of Ixhuacuth's 60 families depend on their pond
for all their water needs. Volunteers have helped the community
and the water reserve by constructing a live fence around the area,
creating a trail around the pond to stop erosion, and constructing
thatch roof bungalows and picnic tables near the pond. We will
continue to monitor, protect, and reforest this area so that future
generations can enjoy its beauty and benefits.
