Well our first semester of our inaugural year has come
to a close, and we now have our list of the 11 students
that will receive scholarships from the 11 generous
donations given to them for this year. Guatemala has
suspended all classes due to the new flu, so we hope to
start the new semester when the Ministry of Education
authorizes schools to open again.
We are starting to plan for our 2nd school
year in 2010, and desperately need your help. Paul
Thorne, a former volunteer, has set up a great way to
help us fundraise for our school. Paul did some
fundraising late last year and drummed up nearly $1500
worth of donations to buy 4 computers for our library
and school. He drew up a basic outline of what he did
and why it was successful. Please check it out at
www.volunteerpeten.com/fundraising.htm
If you, or your school, or your organization would like
to participate, we hope that you can set a goal of $1000
by November 2009. We are expecting enrolment in our
school to surpass 60 next year, and we will need around
$30,000 in total to pay for books, materials, teacher’s
stipends, uniforms, a new school room, and project
materials. You can read all about our new school and
our projects for 2009 at
www.volunteerpeten.com/schoolnaturalresources.htm
We are also sending out a message to potential long term
volunteers that are fluent in Spanish to help teach in
the school from either July-October or January-May. We
can cover your home stay and meals if you can cover the
airfare. Past volunteers will be given preference.

Thanks to June volunteers who worked hard in the
ecological park, construction of a basketball court,
work in the library, and helping in our school. Thanks
to Catherine, Aliza, Phillip, Gerhard, Andy, Steve,
Shausta, Lauren, Jose, Laurel, David, Mike, Clarissa,
Jillian, Judith, Kathryn, Brittany, Laura, Stephanie,
Justin, and Michelle.
In July we will be finishing a basketball court for a
local school (funds provided by Mount St. Mary College),
and getting the 2nd semester started in the natural
resource school. Our projects with the school include
planting 2,000 trees, 5 agricultural plots, building a
fence out of trash, and giving presentations to over
1500 students about reforestation and natural
resources.
Thanks to all your help and support for our program, and
we will continue our work here in San Andres and keep
you informed of our goals and accomplishments.
