Rural Literacy Project

The Rural Literacy Project supported by local donations, was founded by Sue O'Riley and her two daughters, Mollie O. Remillard and Zoe O. Remillard began this work together in 2000 out  of  Williamstown, Massachusetts.  In August 2003, the Rural Literacy Project started working with the local government and Volunteer Petén in the village of San Andres, Petén.  After several visits from volunteers associated with the Rural Literacy Project, the community library of San Andres now has over 2500 books.  Books are a variety of known children's classics such as Charlotte's Web, Lord of the Rings (Señor de los Anillos), and The Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe, as well as current children's favorites such as Harry Potter, Holes, and Captain Underpants.

In 2004, the director of Volunteer Peten and international volunteers started opening the library on a daily basis for community use.  By the end of 2005, the average daily number of visitors to the library was around 150, and given that the library can hold about 25 people comfortably, we quickly began working on the construction of a new library that can accomadate the growing number of users.  Construction of the new library began in March 2006 and finished in September 2007. Today, an average of 400 local students use the library on a daily basis.

Projected cost for this project was $20,000, for construction and furnishing.  We raised money for the project through the Rural Literacy Project out of Williamstown, MA, and from private donations If you are interested in donating to this ongoing project, please click here.

WE DESPERATELY NEED FUNDING FOR THE FOLLOWING

  • Yearly Maintainance ($1,000 per year)
  • Internet Monthly Costs ($40 per month)
  • daily newspaper subscription ($20 per month)
  • student worker/librarian scholarship ($80 per month)

And any $$$ donation is desperately needed to continue to purchase books and run programs through the community library.

The Library was designed by architect Inoky Cameros, and supervison of the project is by Inoky Cameros as well.
