Rural Literacy Project

(June 28th - July 12th,  2005)

The Rural Literacy Project is a local group of older teens, educators and students who work to spread literacy in Latin America. The group raises money and collects children's books in Spanish to be organized and carried down to rural communities in Honduras, Guatemala, Peru and Nicaragua.

The work of the project is supported by volunteers, many from Trinity Episcopal Church in Randolph and from Williamstown Elementary School. They have held bookdrives, dances and car washes to raise funds, and have publicized their work by visiting college campuses, letter writing campaigns, and by visiting church, community and school meetings.

The project has helped establish working libraries in the cities of Guiamaca, Honduras, and San Andres, Guatemala, communities that had little or no access to books before the Project brought them there. In 2005, the project is working to create libraries in the Mazan, Peru, and Somotillo, Nicaragua, running literature groups in schools, and expanding the library in San Andres.
