2006 projects

In 2006, our first and largest project will be to start and finish the new community library for the town of San Andres.  Side projects for 2006 include finishing touches to the ecological park, school programs, and continuing work on reparation of schools and providing educational materials to local schools.

Community Library and Cultural Center

Project Cost: $15,000

Donations collected: $7,000

As our library project grows, so does our need to provide a larger area for activities and books.  Donations for this project will go to building a facility for the library and cultural center, furniture, repairs and improvements to building, and materials for activities.

School Room for the North School (Escuela Norte)

Project cost: $100

 

In January 2006, Volunteers and local worker Genaro Mendez built a new classroom for the Escuela Norte.  The project took a little over a week and included putting up the wooden walls, new fence wire, and a new door.

     

School Projects

We will continue to work with all the schools in the San Andres community helping them with small projects such as simple maintenance, painting, establishing libraries, installing water systems, landscaping, and reforestation.BACK

Ixhuacut Town Playground

Project Cost: $1,000

 

Students and teachers from the Eagle Rock School generated funds to build a playground and town center for Ixhuacut, a small town about 3 km north of San Andres.  The playground includes 2 bungalows, a swing set, monkey bars, and teeter-totters.

 

Eduardo Fion Mural

Project Cost: $500

 

Members of the Brathay Exploration Group and Betsy Cox Summer Camp help to paint the entire Eduardo Fion School and paint a great mural on the outside wall.

 

North School Stage

Project Cost: $700

 

Students from the International Law Society Vermon Law School generated funds to help construct a new stage for the north school.

 

 

Field Trips

Project Cost: $200

 

Volunteers took local students on 3 field trips in 2006: to the Petencito Zoo, Tikal National Park, and Yaxha National Park.
