AGRICULTURAL PROJECT

Project Started: January 2004

Expected Termination Date: December 2004

Total Cost: Q2,000.00

The agricultural project has taken a new form thanks to long term volunteer Davey Owens.  The idea of the project is to create a working organic farm to be used primarily as an educational tool.  We will also begin experimenting with different natural fertilizers and repellents.  We are also gathering all pertinent information on agricultural crops, soils, seed beds, nurseries, harvesting cycles, and best management practices for the Petén.

Expected Termination Date: April 2004

Total Cost: Q1,000.00

Our medicinal plant garden is now entering its final stages before completion as the primer botanical garden in the Petén.  This year we are organizing all the plants, creating a map of the garden, and creating informative plaques for each species of medicinal plant (107 species) which will include name, scientific name, description, uses, and preparation of plant.

Project Coordinator: Clementina Camal and Leticia Montiel. (Special thanks to Jessica Kelly, Michael and Selena LeFevre, for setting up the medicinal plant catalogue.)

Suspension bridge and other bridges for park

Project Started: February 2004

Expected Termination Date: November 2004

Total Cost: Q1,000.00

To help facilitate tours and walking through the park, volunteers constructed a suspension bridge and 4 additional bridges to cross over temporary stream beds that occur during the rainy season.  A canal has also been dug connecting all temporary stream paths to help prevent flooding of the trails.
